We’re officially past the “fresh start” phase of January. You’ve been on your new—or renewed—fitness journey for a few weeks and now real life has fully stepped back up. This is the moment things start to feel more difficult. Work is again busy. School schedules are again hectic. Your days are again filled with responsibilities, deadlines, and decisions pulling at your time and energy.
This is the point where many people just give up. Not because they lose interest—but because staying consistent gets more challenging when routines compete for attention. Talk about a goal buzz kill!
Over years of coaching, I’ve seen what actually keeps people moving forward, and today I’m sharing FOUR PRACTICAL STRATEGIES that my most successful clients use—and that you can use too:
- “Future-You”
- Make working out as enjoyable as you can
- Track and review your wins
- Get support
And here’s an important truth most people don’t recognize: even the most consistent, motivated athletes struggle at times. Progress isn’t fueled by constantly being hyped-up about the gym—it’s built through strategies that work when momentum stalls.
Before we go any further, KUDOS. You took action. You chose your health. You showed up. That matters more than most people realize. The early mornings, the small decisions, the effort you’ve already put in—those are signs you’re building something real. Putting yourself first is a bold move. Props for resisting the snooze button, asking if the meeting could be an email, and saying “not now” to Netflix.
Now, let’s talk about how to keep momentum.
1. FOCUS ON “FUTURE YOU”
The “12 weeks from now, Future-You” will happen regardless of the decisions you make. Time marches on whether you stay on plan or jump off the track. “Future-You” is still in the queue.
But how you show up will have everything to do with the actions you take today and continue doing. Stepping up for “Future-You” is powerful.
Start by thinking about what you want as a result of training. Become fully invested in pursuing the goal that will make “Future-You” happier than you are today. Putting focus on the reward, makes putting in the work much easier.
Try this. Close your eyes. Zoom forward twelve weeks from now. “Future-You” has become “TODAY-YOU.” Visualize that you took action, stuck with your fitness plan, and did all the things. Not every gym session was fun, or felt great, but the majority of them left you feeling empowered.
And, now visualize…
• How fantastic does it feel to be stronger and more confident? You carried that box instead of asking for help. You tried on the “pants”—then, bought them.
• How much better does “Future-You” look and feel? You sit up taller. You smile a little more. And, a happier you is a more attractive person to be around.
• And, wow, the energy “Future-You” has! You might not become the Energizer Bunny, but you just might become a “super do-er.”
Also consider how a happier “Future-You” affects those in your sphere. For example: “I’m worn out, but I want to be a good role model for my kid. I’ll hit the gym even though I’m tired.”
>>> Burn the image of happy, stronger “Future-You” in your brain so that you can revisit it when you feel tempted to stop. <<<
Now bring yourself back to today. Sure, you’ve not arrived at your goal yet. But, what is a simple step—an action—you can take now toward happier “Future-You”?
• Add an extra glass of water to your day.
• Take a 10 minute walk-break.
• Pack your gym bag the night before and sit it by the door.
• Lock-down your workout time on your calendar so no one is allowed to take it from you.

2. DO THINGS YOU ENJOY!
Ok, so if we’re gonna make this happier version of “Future-You” happen, let’s do it in the most enjoyable way possible…By using magic! Ready?!
Seriously, there’s no magic. I looked. You must put in work to get results, but you don’t have to be miserable while you do it. The old-school approach of suffering through workouts you hate is over. No more motivation murdering moves. There, I said it. [BTW, I hate Sumo Deadlift High Pulls. And I’ll take Wall Balls over Thrusters all day. Blah!]
To fuel your momentum, you should do things you enjoy. If you absolutely hate movement of any kind, yes, you’re going to be in a tough spot. But if you have “likes” and “dislikes,” a skilled coach can help you with a fitness plan that will dodge the eye-rolling moves while working the same muscle groups.
For example, you dislike the “dreadmill,” and feel like a hamster when you’re stuck running on one. No problem. There are other options. Not all are inside the gym. Your workout plan could involve biking local trails, paddling the river, or bouldering interesting terrain.
If you don’t enjoy using a barbell, a great trainer can help you find success with other implements, like dumbbells, sandbags, or kettlebells.
The point: You don’t have to be a masochist to be fit. Find activities that make you happy and will keep you working toward your goals.
3. TRACK AND REVIEW ALL WINS!
Know this: Motivation doesn’t produce success. Motivation comes from success! Find small victories every day to stoke your fire. These are the little things that add up to very big things.
Say you feel hopeless about accomplishing your long-term goal of losing 20 lb. “I’ll never get there. I’m wasting my time!”
Reframe that negativity to: “I worked out today, and that’s a huge step toward my big goal. Every workout is a step in the right direction.”
How about this one: “I did 8 reps today when I could only do 7 last week!”
See the difference? You have to tell yourself the story of… “Future-You!” to make “Future-You” a reality of YOU.
Perspective is everything. Here’s a bonus tip to help you get there:
>>> After every workout, write down a BRIGHT SPOT — your win for the day. No matter what it is, document it in your workout journal, your notes app, wherever, just note it. When you hit those low spots and feel off-track, review your “win streak” when you need to recalibrate and recharge your efforts. <<<
4. CALL FOR BACK-UP
Building “Future-You” is definitely a process. It’s very easy to lose steam on your own. It can be hard to see progress, break old habits, and push on without feedback or encouragement.
You need support.
Perhaps there is someone in your circle with similar fitness ambitions that could become your training and accountability partner. If you struggle with meal-prep, consider investing in a pre-made meal service subscription.
Maybe you’re just at a loss for what to do in the gym. Definitely, look at hiring a coach.
A professional personal trainer, will make a world of difference. An outside expert can see things you miss: “Wow — you’re so much stronger than you were last month!” Or “did you just do 5 push-ups in a row? Do you realize how far you’ve come in just three months?”
A trainer can also remind you of what’s important. Or they can just provide the words you need to hear: “I know you are capable of more,” or “let’s book your next session right now so it’s on the calendar.”
Think of a personal trainer as a trusted advisor—someone who helps you clarify your goals, creates a clear plan, and holds you accountable when life gets in the way.
